Long before the emergence of household chemical goods humans learned the habits and preferences of mosquitoes, and using the knowledge learned to reduce the risk of being bitten by these insects.
As a rule, various means, including repellents that frighten away insects are used to protect against mosquitoes. Repellents are substances used to scare off insects. Their mechanism of action is either in mosquito frightening with caustic odor, or in disguise of “an attractive aroma”. Of course now there are a lot of repellents on sale for every taste but natural mosquito repellents are most safe for human health, which is very important, especially concerning their use for children or for people who can not tolerate “synthetics.”
There is a wide variety of proven mosquito’s protection means among people “recipes”. Mosquitoes can not sustain the smell of tomato leaves. If they feel it, they just fly away. You can put a few potted tomato bushes in front of windows or on the balcony and it will be a reliable barrier against the pesky bloodsuckers. Also on the balcony you can put pots of flowers, and may the basil and tansy be among them. Their scent scares away mosquitoes.
There are many homemade mosquito repellents based on essential oils: lemon, lavender, peppermint, clove, basil, eucalyptus, anise, cedar tree oil. Tea tree oil can also be used as a repellent.
The above-listed oils can be added in special lamps for the spread of odors – aromatic lamp. Also the exposed skin can be lubricated with essential oils. You can add them in cream or drop (5-10 drops) on open fire: a fireplace, a bonfire, a candle, on a heated frying pan. A piece of gauze can be saturated with oil of these plants and be putted on the windowsill; you can also lubricate the window frame with the relevant oil.
Essential oils are good because they can be applied to both adults and children. Just be sure you do not have the oil allergy. If you want these tools to work really well, they must be applied to the body every two hours. If you have a private house, you can place the vessels with water and essential oil in the yard.
The vanilla extract, preferably natural is also workable. It must be applied to the pulse points – wrists, neck, elbows and behind the knees.
The smell of crumbled leaves of wormwood, thyme, melissa and magnolia vine also frightens away mosquitoes. None of the insects touches the face, if you wash yourself with the decoction of wormwood roots. Garlic has not very pleasant smell, but it also works. The smell of valerian, from which the decoction can be prepared, effectively deters mosquitoes.
Mosquitoes also do not like the smoke from the fire. Smoke from the fire will be more effective if you throw pine cones and twigs or slightly dry-through juniper needles in the fire.
Persian, Dalmatian or Caucasian camomile (pyrethrum) is the old proven remedy for mosquitoes. A few dried inflorescences, stems and leaves of these species of camomile can be putted into the room, and you will get rid of mosquitoes for a week.
So, home homemade remedies for mosquitoes, of course, are good because they are simple, safe for health and environmentally friendly.
